Switzerland has been ranked as the world’s best country in the 2025 edition of the US News & World Report annual study, released in May. The evaluation assessed 100 nations across multiple metrics including economic strength, health systems, cultural influence, and governance stability.<\/p>\n
The report gave Switzerland the top overall score, placing it ahead of Denmark in second position and Sweden in third. European countries dominated the upper half of the list, occupying all but one spot in the top 15.<\/p>\n
Switzerland received the highest score in the governance category. US News & World Report assigned the country perfect scores for political violence risk, regime turnover, and inflation volatility. The nation operates a federalized government system where two chambers elect a seven-member Federal Council, according to Presence Switzerland.<\/p>\n
Trust in the national government is relatively high. The OECD reported that 62 percent of Swiss residents had high or moderately high trust in their national government in 2023, compared to the OECD average of 39 percent. However, the report noted low voter turnout at an average of 46.09 percent, according to the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, which lowered Switzerland’s score in that subcategory.<\/p>\n
The country ranked first in economic development. Sven Siepen, a senior partner at Roland Berger’s Zurich office, said in a 2025 report about the Swiss economy that exports are surging, inflation remains low, and innovation keeps the country competitive. \u201cEven as global challenges mount, Swiss stability remains our greatest asset,\u201d Siepen said.<\/p>\n
Switzerland ranked fourth in health outcomes. The country has a life expectancy at birth of 84.1 years, earning a perfect score in the report. According to World Bank Group data, this is the fourth-highest life expectancy globally.<\/p>\n
The nation operates a universal private health insurance system. Switzerland spends the second-most per capita on healthcare in the world, trailing only the United States, based on data from the Bern University of Applied Sciences. In 2022, the country had 4.5 physicians per 1,000 residents, compared to 3.7 in the U.S. and a global average of 1.9, according to the World Bank.<\/p>\n
The report noted a lower score for hospital bed availability, with 4.4 beds per 1,000 residents in 2023. This is below the European Union average of 5.1 beds per 1,000 people in 2022, based on World Bank data.<\/p>\n
Switzerland placed second in the culture and tourism category. The report noted that 19 Nobel Laureates were born in Switzerland, not including Albert Einstein, who emigrated from Germany and lived in the country for roughly 20 years. The nation is home to 13 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Chillon Castle on Lake Geneva, a medieval castle dating back approximately 800 years that is classified as a Swiss Cultural Property of National Significance.<\/p>\n
The country attracted record numbers of tourists in 2024. The Swiss hotel industry reported a record number of overnight stays, largely driven by American tourists, according to Reuters. Switzerland also exports $59 billion in creative goods and services annually, according to the US News report.<\/p>\n
The report ranked Switzerland second in opportunity. The average number of years spent in formal education for adults aged 25 and older is 13.9 years, roughly on par with the United States, according to the State of the Nation Project. The country is home to top universities such as the University of Zurich.<\/p>\n
