Multiple major US airlines have announced increases to their checked baggage fees in recent days, citing rising operational costs. Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and JetBlue have all implemented or announced higher charges for passengers checking luggage on domestic and select international routes.
The fee adjustments come as the global aviation industry contends with significant increases in the price of jet fuel. Industry analysts attribute the fuel price surge to broader supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions affecting oil markets.
Southwest Airlines confirmed it will increase fees for first and second checked bags by $10 each. This change will apply to all tickets booked for travel within the mainland United States on or after April 9. Following the increase, the cost for a first checked bag will rise to $45, while a second bag will cost $55.
For interisland travel in Hawaii for non-residents, fees will also increase for tickets purchased on or after April 9. The first checked bag will cost $30 and the second will be $40. The airline stated that different tiers of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program members will retain their existing baggage benefits.
In a statement to CNBC, Southwest Airlines said the decision was part of an ongoing analysis of its business against the evolving global backdrop. The increase is effective for all reservations ticketed or voluntarily changed on or after April 9, 2026.
Delta Air Lines announced a similar $10 increase for first and second checked bags, effective from Wednesday. The airline also stated fees for a third checked bag will increase by $50. These changes apply to domestic flights and certain short haul international routes.
Long haul international flights and complimentary baggage benefits linked to fare class or elite status are not affected by this change. Delta explained the updates reflect a routine review of pricing and the impact of evolving global conditions and industry dynamics.
United Airlines made an identical adjustment, raising fees for first and second checked bags by $10 and adding a $50 surcharge for a third bag. The airline said the new fees apply to customers traveling in the US, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America on tickets purchased from Friday, April 3.
JetBlue increased its checked baggage fees at the end of March. For domestic flights, the price for a first checked bag rose to $39 from $35 on non peak travel days. On peak travel days, the fee increased to $49 from $40.
In a previous statement, a JetBlue spokesperson cited rising operating costs as a factor in the decision. The airline stated it evaluates such costs regularly to manage them while keeping base fares competitive.
Airlines have already implemented broad increases to ticket prices and introduced various fuel surcharges in recent months. The additional baggage fee hikes represent a further effort to offset elevated operational expenses.
Passengers are advised to check the specific baggage policies and fee structures of their airline at the time of booking and before travel. Fees can vary significantly based on route, fare type, and loyalty program status.
